NEWS LETTER
April 19, 2007
As always the Devon Legion branch is looking for
your support. It is important to us that our members become more
involved.
We have a
number of immediate and long term goals on the agenda, including
extending our Lounge hours and fixing the hours of operation in order to
show satellite sports games on our giant screen TV.
We have
developed a Branch web site, the address is
www.devonlegion.com , please
check often for updates. There is also a link though the Towns web site.
Our New Years Eve dance held at the Community Hall
was very successful, as was our Murder Mystery which was held in the
Branch Lounge on March 3rd.
We have many more events planned for 2007
including a Family Sports Day that will be held at the Devon Lions Park
in July, more details to follow. We encourage everyone to come out and
enjoy themselves.
Other short
term goals are to split the Lounge into smoking and non smoking areas.
The improved exhaust system is working very well and seems to be keeping
both smokers and non-smokers happy.
A free
Veteran’s Workshop was held on April 18th. , which included lunch. We
believe that this workshop was of great benefit to all of our Veterans.
One of our
long term goals is to develop a Business Plan that will look at a
building addition that will provide a ground level lounge. The results
of the Business Plan will determine the viability of such an addition.
If you have any skills in this area please come forward and volunteer your
services.
The Ladies
Auxiliary has been revived and become very active. One of their
initiatives was to purchase the giant screen TV which can be enjoyed by
all, primarily for sports events and possibly movie nights, etc.
These are
only a few of our ideas. Again, please check the web site for more
details or drop into the Lounge for a friendly drink to find out what is
going on. Also, keep an eye on the portable sign, located on the West
side of the Legion Hall along Superior Street, for upcoming events.
All of
these initiatives take time and effort. The more people involved, the
easier the undertaking. If there is anything that you can do for the
Branch or any ideas or expertise that you can bring to the table, please
come down and volunteer your time and help make these things happen.
We hosted
the Zone/Area Rally on March 31 2007, it was well attended and the Branch
received excellent reviews from all of the attendees.
The Branch
continues to donate funds to a large number of community groups which
aids them in making Devon a better place.
We are
still holding our Meat Draws every Saturday in the Lounge from 3pm to
5:30pm. You can either drop in for a laugh and maybe win supper or you
could volunteer to run one of the draws.
We are
making a change to our Friday night schedule through the summer from our
traditional BBQ’s, our intent is to run sports events on the big screen
and cook burgers up for the patrons. Also keep an eye open for our golf
tournaments.
A big
thanks must also go to the volunteers who spent numerous weekends
redecorating the lounge, it is a much brighter and pleasant environment
thanks to their efforts.
The
executive are working hard to both honour the past while putting new
initiatives into place to make sure that the Devon Legion Branch will be
a viable and active part of the community well into the future.
We support
our troops where ever they are serving around the globe and as our Sgt at
Arms says, due to the various conflicts around the world “our veterans
are getting younger”.
I would
like to thank all of the Executive and Volunteers and our Staff for the
great work that they do to make all of our events happen.
Spring is
upon us and on behalf of the Executive, we hope that you all have a
happy and prosperous year and we hope to see you all from time to time at
the Legion.
